Funding Graduate Studies

We strongly recommend that you begin researching your funding possibilities at least one year ahead of your proposed start date (the academic year begins in October). Some funding deadlines come up before the end of the year before you intend to come to Cambridge. You will not be admitted to the University and to the College unless you have a secure and demonstrable package of funding, for both fees and maintenance, in place before you begin your studies. Apart from the scholarships listed on this page, the College has no significant funds with which to assist prospective graduate students.

There are, however, numerous sources of funds, including a range of scholarships, studentships and bursaries offered by the University, Departments, Faculties and independent organisations. ‘Camfunds’ is a useful database for these funding possibilities:

Home and EU applicants should consider the awards and scholarships available under the CHESS scheme:
http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/fees/funding/chess/index.html

Prospective applicants from overseas should consult the Cambridge Trusts’ search facility:
http://www.cambridgetrusts.org/index.html

and the website of the Gates Cambridge Trust:
http://www.gatesscholar.org/

It is important to keep to the deadlines for applications; they vary between the different schemes. Please note that these dates are for completed applications (i.e. ALL parts of your application must arrive by the deadline).

Cambridge Bursary Scheme

Eligible students for support under the Cambridge Bursary Scheme will be sent the appropriate forms automatically by the Tutorial Office. Some students taking graduate courses also qualify for support under the regulations. These courses include clinical medicine and clinical veterinary medicine.

Support from Magdalene College

Each year the College advertises the following Scholarships:

  1. Leslie Wilson Research Scholarship
  2. Mandela Magdalene Scholarship
  3. Clutton Brock Scholarship
  4. Roosevelt Scholarship
  5. Donner Scholarship
  6. Halper Family Bursary

For graduate students in residence, the Graduate Tutor can advise on the availability of fund to assist (in a modest way) with research costs. The College also maintains a hardship fund from which help may be requested if an individual's circumstances unexpectedly change.

A special feature of Magdalene is that, for the duration of their third year, research students studying for the PhD degree may be elected to Bye-Fellowships (entitling them to free rooms in College and full High Table dining rights): up to two Bye-Fellowships may be awarded simultaneously. Prestigious Research Fellowships, lasting for three years and offering a stipend, accommodation and full High Table dining rights, are advertised every year. In addition, a number of Senior Research Fellowships are available to those working at a post-doctoral level.
