The Halper Family Fund will support a Bursary open to well-qualified British candidates who will be studying at the University of Cambridge for an appropriate MPhil degree in one of the following fields: Atlantic Relations, US foreign policy or Anglo-American security questions. Successful candidates will have satisfied the provisional requirements of the Board of Graduate Studies of the University of Cambridge and have been provisionally accepted for registration at the Department of Politics and International Studies.
The Bursary can only be held at Magdalene College and the recipient will become a College Scholar. The Bursary will be tenable for one year from the start of the next academic year (1 October 2012). Candidates must have graduated at a University before 1 October 2012. Consideration will normally be restricted to those who have a record of academic excellence consistent with the proposed field of study and who can demonstrate the potential to make a significant contribution to the broader life of Magdalene College, as well as to the wider interests of Anglo - North American relations at the University of Cambridge. It is anticipated that recipients of the Bursary will proceed to a career in diplomatic service, academia, the military or similar profession. While consideration will normally be restricted to those who have obtained, or who have a strong prospect of obtaining, a first-class Honours degree, evidence of subsequent intellectual development will be taken into account. We expect the Halper Family Bursary to become an award which in due course will be placed among the most prestigious awards in the University.
In determining the value of the Scholarship in individual cases, the College will take into account a candidate's income from all sources. The maximum award that will be made to a Scholar will be a contribution to maintenance costs of £8,000 (at 2012 - 2013 costs). It follows, therefore, that an applicant will have found, or have applied for, the costs of meeting i) University and College Fees and ii) outstanding maintenance costs. Details of these fee levels can be found at:

Those wishing to be considered for a Halper Family Bursary must apply to the University to be admitted for the MPhil degree and to the College for consideration for the Bursary. For the University application, applicants must apply to the Board of Graduate Studies, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2 1RZ, for admission to the University as a Graduate Student using the usual GRADSAF form which is obtainable (in hard copy or electronically) from the Board. Applicants must have been provisionally accepted by the Department of Politics and International Studies before their application can be considered for College membership. For the College application, an application form is available via the College website or by application to the Graduate Tutor's Assistant in College. The closing date for the College competition is 1 June 2012. Applications, and supporting references, must be received in hard copy or by email attachment in College by the closing date.
A College Selection Committee will assess applications on the basis of academic record, the proposed field of study within the University and the reports of two external referees. Preference will be given to those who have nominated Magdalene as their first-choice College on the University GRADSAF form. The recommendation of the Selection Committee will be forwarded to the College's Academic Committee, and subsequently the College's Governing Body, for ratification. The outcome of the competition should be known by end July 2012.
The College will endeavour to offer rented accommodation in or near College to a single award holder. For couples, our accommodation stock is very restricted but we will help if we can do so.
