The Donner Scholarship is open to exceptionally well-qualified British and Canadian candidates, of outstanding academic and leadership potential. They will be studying at the University of Cambridge for an appropriate MPhil degree in matters relevant to any aspect of Anglo - North American relations. Successful candidates will have satisfied the provisional requirements of the Board of Graduate Studies of the University of Cambridge and have been provisionally accepted for registration on one of its postgraduate programmes
The Scholarship will be tenable for one year from the start of the next academic year (1 October 2012). Candidates must have graduated at a University before 1 October 2012. Consideration will normally be restricted to those who have a record of academic excellence consistent with the proposed field of study and who can demonstrate the potential to make a significant contribution to the broader life of Magdalene College. It is expected that in due course Donner Scholars will become leading figures in the field of Anglo - North American relations. While consideration will normally be restricted to those who have obtained, or who have a strong prospect of obtaining, a first-class Honours degree (or its North American equivalent), evidence of subsequent intellectual development will be taken into account.
In determining the value of the Scholarship in individual cases, the College will take into account a candidate's income from all sources. The maximum award that will be made to a Scholar who has no other sources of finance will be as follows:For a UK / European Union applicant:
Maintenance grant: £11,250 (2012 - 2013 cost)
University fees: £3,807 (2012 - 2013 cost)
College fees: £2,295 (2011 -2012 cost)
Total: £17,415
For an applicant of Canadian nationality:
Maintenance grant: £11,250 (2012 - 2013 cost)
University fees: £13,011 (2012 - 2013 cost)
College fees: £2,295 (2011 - 2012 cost)
Total: £26,619
It should be noted that University and College fees and other costs are set yearly and are subject to an annual increase, which may be substantial. At the present time, these increases are of the order of 5% per annum.
Canadian applicants liable to pay University Fees at the overseas rate will be expected to apply for Overseas Student Bursaries awarded by the University of Cambridge and organised by the Cambridge Trusts and the Board of Graduate Studies.
Those wishing to be considered for a Donner Scholarship must apply to the University and to the College. For the University application, applicants must apply to the Board of Graduate Studies, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2 1RZ, for admission to the University as a Graduate Student using the usual GRADSAF form which is obtainable (in hard copy or electronically) from the Board. Applicants must have been provisionally accepted by a Department or Faculty of the University before their application can be considered for College membership.
The College application form is available via the College website or by application to the Graduate Tutor's Assistant in College. The closing date is 1 June 2012. Applications, and supporting references, must be received in hard copy or by email attachment by the closing date.
Following receipt of applications, the College will check to confirm that an applicant has been offered a provisional place in a University Department of Faculty. The applications of all eligible students will then be considered by a Selection Committee of experienced academic members of Magdalene College appointed by the College's Academic Committee. The Committee will assess applications on the basis of academic record, the proposed field of study within the University and the reports of two external referees. Preference may be given to those nominating Magdalene as their first-choice College. The recommendation of the Selection Committee will be forwarded to the College's Academic Committee, and subsequently the College's Governing Body, for ratification. The outcome of the competition should be known by end July 2012.
The College will endeavour to offer rented accommodation in or near College to a single Scholar. For couples, our accommodation stock is very restricted but we will help if we can do so.
Successful applicants will be expected to provide the Donner Foundation with a brief report on their time in Cambridge, to be submitted within three months of the completion of their course.
