Fees and Maintenance

Major Fees

The 'Studying at Cambridge' page of information for prospective graduate students gives helpful information on the costs of studying at Cambridge, with details on 'Course costs and Fees Status'. Every graduate student pays fees both to the University and to the College. If you have a full scholarship or grant, these fees will usually be charged directly to your scholarship authority or grant-giving body. If you are self-financing or in a special category, you must pay them yourself, in advance, at the beginning of each academic year. Each graduate student should arrange for the payment of fees before coming into residence and should inform the College Office of arrangements. You should not expect remission of fees from the University or College and should provide sufficient money for all the time you expect to be here, allowing for inflation.

Minor Fees

The MCR Committee fixes a small fee (£15 per term) to provide social facilities in the MCR. This is charged on the termly College bill.

Self-financed graduate students may be required to pay a fee to their Department to cover the exceptional cost of any special items needed for their research. The Department should clearly indicate when it accepts an application if it intends to make such a charge and it will be shown as a special provision on the acceptance form sent to the candidate by the Board of Graduate Studies.

Maintenance

Once again, each applicant should consult the University web pages for graduate studies. The major items of maintenance are rent, heating, food, travel, the purchase of books, clothing and domestic items.

If you are a single graduate living in College, the rent and heating of your room, the cost of meals taken in College and the cost of other items (bar, MCR subscription, etc.) are billed at the end of each term (December; March; June: and at the end of the Long Vacation in September). (See costs and charges.) The rent quoted for your College room is for the period of Term. Outside the ten weeks of term there is an additional charge of 1/60th the quoted rental for every night spent in residence. Single graduates living in College are required to pay a term's rent in advance to the College at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term (October). This sum of money is deducted from the final bill of the academic year.

If you are a married graduate or single graduate living outside the College but in College-owned lodgings, rent is paid monthly in advance to the College. A deposit equal to one month's rent is also required in advance when the tenancy agreement is signed. You will also receive College bills in December, March, June and September for meals and other items purchased through the College and you are expected to make prompt payment.
