Professor the Hon Richard Tedder came to Magdalene in 1965 to read Medicine and Zoology. Entering the Health Service he held various hospital posts before being given a personal Chair in Virology at University College Hospital Medical School London in 1982. He also has a Wellcome Fellowship in Pathology. His main research interest is in the medical virology of hepatitis, AIDS and other related diseases, and he is also interested in transfusion microbiology.

Richard has published more than 70 papers, and is on the editorial board of six medical journals. For a man who is an external consultant to the WHO, a member of the Council of the Malcolm Club (RAF) and who undertakes committee work for the Department of Health, the Medical Research Council and the National Blood Transfusion Service, it is surprising that he manages to find time for his hobby of flying light aircraft.
