Gavin Hastings OBE came to Magdalene in 1984 as a graduate student, having obtained his first degree at Paisley College of Technology. Of all the many and varied sports played by Cambridge students, the annual Oxford v Cambridge rugby football game at Twickenham in December ranks highly, attracting over 60,000 spectators. Some Cambridge Colleges may have produced more international rugby players than Magdalene, but none has achieved so much in this sport as Gavin Hastings. Captain of Watsonians, Cambridge University, London Scottish, the Barbarians, Scotland and the British Isles, he has had a distinguished record as an outstanding player and an inspirational captain.
