Professor Sir John Boardman FBA HonRA came up to Magdalene to read Classics in 1945. He spent several years in Greece, three of them as Assistant Director of the British School in Athens. He has conducted archaeological excavations in Smyrna, Crete, Chios and Libya. Sir John began a long association with the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in 1955, successively as Assistant Keeper, Reader in Classical Archaeology and, from 1978-94, Lincoln Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art in the University of Oxford.

He has written widely on the art and architecture of ancient Greece, in particular sculpture and vase-painting. His numerous books and articles include The Oxford History of the Classical World, The Oxford History of Classical Art, The Greeks Overseas and Diffusion of Classical Art in Antiquity, based on his series of Andrew Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery Washington DC in 1993.
